Baldur’s Gate 3 Gets a Fan-Made Expansion Nearly the Size of a Full Act

Baldur’s Gate 3 has received a large fan-made expansion called Act Two Expansion, which took nearly two years to develop. A modder going by the alias SquallyDaBeanz has added a vast new area, Chionthar Wilds, that fits organically into the story between the end of Act Two and the party’s arrival at the outskirts of Baldur’s Gate.

A story bridge, 30 battles and 70 new items

Narratively, the mod fills a gap in the heroes’ journey. After defeating Ketheric Thorm’s forces in the Shadow-Cursed Lands, the Cult of the Absolute continues its march on the capital, and Tav’s party must cross the Chionthar River and fight its way to Rivington through dangerous coastal forests.

According to the expansion’s page on Nexus Mods, the project offers:

  • A large above-ground map with dungeons, comparable in scale to the starting wilderness of Act One;
  • More than 30 scripted combat encounters with unique enemy characteristics;
  • Over 70 new pieces of equipment, weapons and magical artifacts;
  • New side quests with cutscenes and spatial puzzles, balanced for a level 8–10 party.

The mod supports online co-op (provided every player in the lobby installs the same version) and works with existing saves if you activate the expansion before leaving the Act Two locations. For quick testing, the author has included a QuickStart mode with a ready-made party.

Beta status and local consequences

In an official discussion in the r/BaldursGate3 community, the developer warns that the build is an open beta (version 0.8). Players are advised to save manually more often: in rare cases, script failures at the end of the fan-made region can block the party’s transition into Act Three.

Decisions made inside Chionthar Wilds are deliberately isolated and do not break the canonical Act 3 story branches from Larian Studios.

Act Two Expansion can be downloaded for free on Nexus Mods. Because of the complex scripting pipeline, the author does not plan to bring the project to the built-in console catalog Mod.io, focusing all efforts on polishing the stability of the PC version ahead of the final 1.0 build.
