Roblox Movie: 20th Century Studios to Adapt Indie Horror 99 Nights in the Forest

20th Century Studios has officially put a feature-length adaptation of the hit co-op horror game 99 Nights in the Forest, built on the Roblox platform, into production. The company won the adaptation rights in a fiercely competitive bidding war back in April 2026. Online, the news picked up rumors that horror master Sam Raimi was involved in the project, but fact-checking does not confirm this.
Surviving the Forest and a Record Player Count
The original game 99 Nights in the Forest was developed by a small New Zealand team, Grandma’s Favourite Games, in just three months. In this co-op survival story, players build a fortified camp, gather resources and try to survive 99 nights in a dense forest. The main goal is to find and rescue four missing children while fighting off monsters, most notably a giant demonic deer.
According to a report on the Roblox developer portal DevForum, the project became an absolute hit on the platform: at its peak, servers held a fantastic 14 million concurrent players.
The Sam Raimi Fake and the Feature-Film Format
The posters circulating on social media about a “short film from Sam Raimi” are misleading on two counts.
As TheWrap reports, the studio is preparing a full-fledged theatrical feature blockbuster for a wide release. The creators of the original game — Alec Kieft, Matthew Houghton and Cameron England — are attached to the film as executive producers, but the movie still has no approved screenwriter, no casting director and no director — Sam Raimi’s name does not appear in the studio’s official documents.
The Roblox-universe project marks a shift in Hollywood strategy. Where film companies once adapted mainly classic console franchises (Mario, Sonic, The Last of Us), studio scouts have now started looking for fresh ideas in Roblox’s giant ecosystem of user-made worlds, whose audience numbers in the hundreds of millions.
