Nexon in Talks With Blizzard to Make New StarCraft Game

South Korean publisher Nexon is in talks with Blizzard about developing new projects based on the StarCraft franchise. The discussions center on licensing the rights to create and operate a game, not on selling the intellectual property itself — the brand remains fully under Blizzard and Microsoft’s control.

According to South Korean news agency Newsis, the talks are still in their early stages. No final contract has been signed yet, and the parties are discussing the concept, possible genre, and the level of involvement of developers from both sides. Nexon representatives declined to comment officially.

The Franchise Has Long Awaited a Sequel

It has been over a decade since the release of the last major story expansion, StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void, and the remaster of the first game came out in 2017. Yet the iconic strategy still ranks high in popularity at South Korean PC bangs.

According to Dot Esports, if the talks succeed, Nexon could take on either a full-fledged numbered installment, StarCraft 3, or a spin-off in a different genre. Meanwhile, rumors circulate in the industry that an internal Blizzard team is working on its own shooter in the same universe, so the projects could develop in parallel.

The companies already have experience with local collaboration: since August 2026, Nexon has been overseeing server operations and marketing activities for Overwatch in South Korea. Licensing the iconic sci-fi series would be the next step in the partnership.

What to Expect From BlizzCon 2026

Blizzard’s next major event is BlizzCon 2026, which will take place on September 12–13 in Anaheim. The festival’s schedule includes a StarCraft Classic Cup tournament, but there is no dedicated presentation of a new agreement on the agenda yet.

All speculation about an imminent announcement at the festival remains just community expectations for now: until official documents are signed, neither side is ready to reveal project details.
