Zombies Fall From Rooftops: Sony Shows Four-Minute Clip From New Resident Evil

Sony Pictures kicked off its fall State of Play presentation with an exclusive four-minute clip from the upcoming Resident Evil film. The new adaptation is directed by Zach Cregger, known for the horror films Barbarian and Weapons.
The story centers not on a trained special forces soldier, but on an ordinary medical courier named Brian, played by Austin Abrams (Euphoria). The hero heads to Raccoon City Hospital for a routine delivery and ends up in the middle of a biological catastrophe. In the shown scene, Brian tries to make his way through the dark streets of the city while infected people literally jump on him from rooftops one after another.
Original Story and Survival Horror Rules
The creators did not retell the events of specific games in the franchise verbatim. The film tells an original story set during the height of the T-virus outbreak, unfolding parallel to the plot of the classic Resident Evil 2.
As Zach Cregger told PlayStation Blog in an interview, his main sources of inspiration were Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 7:
- from the fourth game, the film takes its fast pace and constant shifts between large-scale action scenes;
- from the seventh game, it borrows the concept of a vulnerable protagonist who is completely unprepared for the nightmare he faces.
The director also brought the resource scarcity mechanic to the big screen. The audience is constantly made aware of how many bullets remain in the courier’s gun and how severe his injuries are, recreating the anxious feeling of classic survival gameplay.
Cast and Release Date
Alongside Austin Abrams, the film stars Paul Walter Hauser, Zach Cherry, and Callee Rae. Cregger co-wrote the script with Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 4).

According to the film’s official website, the international theatrical release of Resident Evil is set for September 18, 2026 (in Ukrainian theaters, it will open on September 17).
