First Time in 23 Years: Blizzard Surprise-Launches New Warcraft III Story Campaign Forsaken Kingdom

Blizzard Entertainment delivered the biggest surprise for classic strategy fans at BlizzCon 2026. Without prior teasers or marketing campaigns, the developer released Forsaken Kingdom—the first brand-new official story campaign for Warcraft III: Reforged in 23 years. The launch arrived on the same day as its announcement on September 12.

The Fall of Lordaeron, the Rise of the Forsaken, and 30 Hours of Missions

The storyline takes players back to the dark period toward the end of the Third War. The campaign centers on the demise of the once-mighty human kingdom of Lordaeron and the formation of the Forsaken undead faction under the banner of Sylvanas Windrunner. Players will witness the fall of one great city and take a direct part in laying the foundation of another, crossing paths with iconic characters and new figures in the conflict.

The scale of the expansion is comparable to a standalone classic add-on:

• The single-player campaign offers over 30 hours of gameplay;
• Missions introduce unique mechanics, new regular units, and heroes with custom skill trees;

The gaming community has called the launch a historic event. The original RTS Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos debuted in 2002, and its last official campaign arrived with The Frozen Throne expansion back in the summer of 2003. The 2020 launch of Warcraft III: Reforged only visually overhauled the original maps without adding new narrative arcs. As a result, fans have waited nearly a quarter of a century for a continuation of the iconic strategy game.

The shadow drop caught even industry insiders off guard; ahead of the event, rumors pointed only to a routine stability patch.

As the developers confirmed in their official Reddit announcement, the Forsaken Kingdom campaign is already unlocked and available to play in the Battle.net launcher for all owners of the game on PC.
