Volvo XC40 Receives Major Refresh With New Thor’s Hammer Headlights, 11.2-Inch Display, and Google Gemini AI

Swedish automaker Volvo has given a major update to its XC40 compact crossover, alongside the related EX40 and EC40 EVs. Despite rumors from some outlets suggesting a full redesign, the company has instead unveiled a comprehensive refresh featuring updated front lighting, a larger infotainment display with built-in Google Gemini AI, and an expanded suite of active safety sensors.

Updated Thor’s Hammer Lighting and New Display

The crossover’s exterior receives a noticeable refresh while retaining its recognizable Scandinavian silhouette. Up front, it features new Thor’s Hammer matrix headlights, a sculpted hood, redesigned front fenders, a new grille, and a bumper with reworked air intakes.

At the rear, designers updated the LED taillight graphics, installed a new bumper, and refined the tailgate shape. The wheel catalog now includes new aerodynamic alloy designs ranging from 18 to 20 inches.

Inside, the cabin gets a digital overhaul. According to Car and Driver, a vertical 11.2-inch touchscreen replaces the previous 9-inch display. The Android Automotive-based Volvo Car UX system integrates the Google Gemini assistant, which can hold contextual conversations, plot multi-stop routes, and handle messaging without distracting the driver.

However, Volvo refrained from adopting the radical minimalism of the EX30 EV. The cabin maintains its familiar layout and physical volume knob, while adding ambient lighting and a faster wireless charging pad.

Enhanced Sensors, Powertrain, and Launch Timeline

The suite of driver assistance features gets upgraded cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and radar units. The Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving system provides smoother lane centering, assists during lane changes, and warns passengers if a cyclist is approaching when opening a door. The parking cameras now offer a realistic 360-degree 3D view.

As noted by Car and Driver, the US-spec crossover drops the front-wheel-drive B4 trim and is now offered exclusively with all-wheel drive (AWD) and a mild-hybrid 247-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged engine.

According to Volvo Cars’ media portal, production of the updated lineup will begin in the fall of 2026, with global dealer deliveries starting in the first quarter of 2027. The refresh is designed to extend the bestseller’s lifecycle as the brand transitions toward an all-electric future.
