Why Lightning McQueen Races With Number 95 — Pixar Hid a Toy Story Reference in It

The racing number 95 on Lightning McQueen’s body in Cars was not chosen at random. It references 1995, the year Pixar released Toy Story — its first feature film and the first fully computer-animated feature film in history.

Disney has officially confirmed the connection: in its roundup of Easter eggs in the Cars universe, the number 95 is explicitly called a tribute to the debut of Toy Story. The movie itself hit theaters on November 22, 1995 and became the project that launched Pixar’s feature-film history.

Originally, though, McQueen was going to get a completely different number. In the early stages of development he raced as No. 57 — in honor of 1957, the birth year of John Lasseter, director of the first Cars. The creators later dropped the personal reference in favor of a date that mattered to the entire studio. MotorTrend also tells this story.

The Easter egg is hidden even in McQueen’s tires

The number is not the only reference to Toy Story. Instead of the real Goodyear brand, the hero’s tires read Lightyear — both an automotive parody and a direct nod to Buzz Lightyear. Disney also officially counts this detail among the Cars Easter eggs.

Such cross-references have long been part of Pixar’s films: characters, objects and familiar details regularly move from one movie to another or recall the studio’s own history.

The number of McQueen’s main rival, Chick Hicks, is less clear-cut. His No. 86 is often linked to 1986, when Steve Jobs bought Lucasfilm’s computer division and Pixar became an independent company. Pixar itself confirms that this happened in 1986, but no official explanation of Chick’s number through that date could be found. So this connection is better considered a popular fan interpretation rather than a confirmed Easter egg.

In McQueen’s case there is no doubt: the famous “95” is a small monument to the film that effectively opened a new era for Pixar in 1995. Even one of the most recognizable elements of the character’s design turned out to be part of the studio’s history.
