CS2 Gets a Major Rush Hour Update – 3×3 Mode, Silent Reloads, New Crosshairs and Hidden Pets

Valve has released one of the biggest Counter-Strike 2 updates in recent memory – Rush Hour. The game has gained a separate competitive Rush 3×3 mode, a completely reworked map selection system in Premier, the return of clan tags, reworked crosshairs and some sound mechanics, an updated Source 2, and a number of changes for map creators.
The strangest addition, however, is one Valve never mentioned in the official patch notes: after the update, players began receiving chicken eggs tied to a new pet system.
The full list of official changes is published on the Counter-Strike 2 page on Steam.
Rush – a new 3×3 matchmaking mode
The headline addition is Rush – a separate fast-paced mode for two teams of three players.
Players start on one of several small combat arenas and try to advance toward the enemy castle. After wiping out the opposing team or running out of time, they must take control of a tower, which wins the round and moves the team forward.
The set of arenas is randomly generated for each match, so their order keeps changing. Rush also gets its own wins leaderboard among friends.
Premier drops the familiar ban system
Valve has completely reworked map selection in Premier. Teams no longer ban maps until only one remains.
The first team picks one map, the second picks two, and then the first adds one more. After that, the system randomly selects the match map from the four chosen maps.
Valve says the change is meant to give players more chances to use strategies on maps they have specifically practiced, instead of having an opponent immediately ban the map they want.
Weapons can now be reloaded silently
A new tactical mechanic has arrived – silent reloading. Holding the reload key lets you reload without making noise, but the process takes significantly longer.
At the same time, Valve has completely removed the sound of scoping out of sniper weapons. Enemies can no longer use that audio cue to tell whether a player has stopped looking through the scope.
The developers also made blood and bullet impact marks more visible, and chickens can now be attacked with a Zeus x27 charge.
Crosshairs no longer depend on resolution
Valve has significantly reworked the crosshair system. Crosshairs no longer depend on screen resolution, which is especially noticeable with non-standard resolutions and aspect ratios.
Settings now include a new Crosshair/Scopes section, additional shapes have been added, and the white Dynamic Quad is now the default. According to Valve, this option gives a more accurate visual representation of a weapon’s current accuracy.
Clan Tags are back too: members of Steam groups can once again choose a tag and display it next to their nickname.
Another cosmetic option – stickers can now be applied directly to the C4.
Valve quietly added chicken eggs
The strangest part of Rush Hour appears neither in Valve’s promotional post nor in the official changelog.
After the patch went live, users began posting screenshots of a Chicken Egg showing up among the Weekly Care Package options. If you pick the egg, it takes up both weekly reward slots.
The egg you get appears next to your character in the main menu, and the interface includes a separate Pet Book tied to the future pet. Players are already showing off eggs in different colors and patterns. A thread with numerous screenshots, for example, has appeared in the CS2 community on Reddit.
Dataminers have also found Chicken Feed, chicken models, photo album elements and other components of the pet system in the client.
Still, it’s important to separate features that already work from files found in the game. Valve has not officially explained how long hatching takes, what pet varieties exist, exactly how feeding works, whether pets will be tradable, or what mechanics will arrive later.
So specific rarity tables, the number of breeds and detailed raising guides can’t yet be treated as confirmed game rules.
Maps, Source 2 and the Workshop get updates
Valve also updated the CS2 code to a newer version of Source 2, without revealing details of the engine’s internal changes.
Four maps received fixes: on Ancient, holes in the Long A Main Hall geometry were closed and the door and grenade clipping in Jaguar were changed; on Cache, gaps near the blue doors on Mid were fixed; on Mirage, the scaffolding near Balcony on A was reinforced; and on Train, a pixel gap between crates at the A site was closed.
Content creators got new Workshop and scripting API features – local minimaps via minimap_volume, separate skybox zones, death camera limits, local camera shake areas, new entities for the radar and spectating, team money control, and a callback for when a player changes teams.
The update also:
- made
ammo_grenade_limit_totalaccount for the total number of grenades purchased per round; - fixed scoreboard stats after the first half;
- closed a way to bypass a kick ban;
- added separate music volume settings for different modes;
- added the Starjunk 95 – Industrial Sunset Memories Music Kit in regular and StatTrak versions.
All in all, Rush Hour turned out to be noticeably bigger than a single new mode: the update touched matchmaking, Premier, weapon mechanics, the interface, visual feedback, maps, Source 2, the Workshop and the cosmetic system all at once. And the arrival of the Chicken Egg shows that Valve is simultaneously starting to roll out an entirely new pet mechanic for Counter-Strike – so far without an official explanation of its rules.
