Mission: Impossible Director and Michael B. Jordan Team Up for Battlefield Movie at Sony Pictures

After the box office success of video game adaptations in recent years, Hollywood has taken on one of the biggest military franchises. Sony Pictures has reached the final stage in the battle for the rights to a feature film based on Electronic Arts’ Battlefield shooter. According to TheWrap, after lengthy bidding the company beat out Warner Bros., Amazon, Universal and Netflix. The deal is now in final negotiations.

The stakes are as high as they get, as the creative team already taking shape shows. Christopher McQuarrie is set to write, direct and produce the film — a veteran of high-octane cinema responsible for the recent Mission: Impossible installments and the screenplay for the blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick.

Actor Michael B. Jordan’s production company Outlier Society (Creed, Black Panther) has also come on board. Rumors immediately circulated online that Jordan would take the lead role, but Variety’s sources clarify that his on-screen involvement is still being discussed and will depend on the final script and shooting schedule.

Lost in Translation: Adapting Pure Multiplayer

The big question remains the format of the future film. The Battlefield series has existed since 2002 and has covered World War II, the Vietnam War, and modern and futuristic conflicts. Unlike story-driven games, the EA franchise has always leaned on large-scale, chaotic multiplayer with infantry, destructibility and heavy vehicles.

That is why choosing McQuarrie as director looks pragmatic: the studio needs someone skilled in complex practical stunts and mass battle scenes, capable of writing a standalone military action film without strict ties to the lore of a specific game installment.

For Electronic Arts, this is far from the first attempt to bring Battlefield to the screen. In 2016, Paramount Television acquired the rights to a TV adaptation, and even earlier Fox planned an action series based on the fast-paced Battlefield: Bad Company. Neither project ever made it to production. The current attempt looks far more promising thanks to competition among Hollywood majors and a well-known team, but Sony has not yet announced exact premiere or shooting dates.
