The Finals Reworks Destruction Physics: Buildings Will Bend and Sag Mid-Fight

On October 20, 2026, with the launch of Season 12, PRIME TIME, the online shooter The Finals will get its biggest physics overhaul since release. Embark Studios is introducing a Gradual Destruction system. Structures on the arenas will no longer instantly shatter into pieces from explosions — buildings will be able to deform, sway and partially hold together, changing geometry right under players’ feet.

Until now, the game’s physics engine operated on binary states: any wall or beam either stayed rigidly in place or broke off and became a separate flying piece of debris. As the developers explain in the game’s blog, the new mechanic adds a flexible plastic deformation phase between those states.

Damaged floors will realistically sag under the weight of fighters, walls will tilt to form sloped ramps, and suspended walkways will be able to sway from grenade launcher hits before finally collapsing. Destruction will stop being just a way to punch through a passage and start generating unpredictable tactical routes in the middle of a firefight.

Shockwaves and tactical smoke

Explosion physics will become far more layered. The official roadmap mentions chain reactions and dynamic piles: detonating a charge will bend a load-bearing beam, which will pull the ceiling slab with it, and the fallen blocks will form a pile of debris you can climb to reach the second floor.

The gas environment has also undergone a major revision. Embark has rewritten the behavior of smoke screens and toxic gas, according to the specialist outlet KitGuru. Dense clouds are now tightly tied to level geometry: toxic gas can no longer seep through solid concrete walls and deal damage in the next room. In addition, a grenade explosion can briefly blow away clouds of smoke with a shockwave, opening a window for aimed fire.

The updated physics will be part of a broader overhaul of The Finals. The October 20 release will also bring a reworked interface and HUD, updated footstep audio, improved global illumination, a fresh competitive mode and a graphical upgrade for the classic maps from Season 1.
