Massive Middle-earth with 3D Minas Tirith: New Lord of the Rings Board Game Raises $1.7M in One Week

Publishers Restoration Games and Space Cowboys have launched a crowdfunding campaign for The Lord of the Rings: The King’s Gambit, an ambitious new wargame. The board game recreates the epic climax of The Return of the King, letting players take control of the War of the Ring. The campaign is off to a massive start: against an initial $500,000 goal, the team raised over $1.7 million in its first week alone, God is a Geek reports.
Designed for one to four players, the game simulates the conflict across multiple interconnected theaters of war. While the Riders of Rohan clash with orc hordes on the Pelennor Fields, the Gondor garrison defends the tiers of Minas Tirith, Aragorn and the Grey Company fight their way through Pelargir, and Frodo and Sam make their way up Mount Doom.
According to Restoration Games’ official description, actions on one battleground directly impact the others: letting the city siege drag on can doom the hobbits’ quest, while a well-timed cavalry charge can turn the tide of the entire campaign.

A Cult Classic’s Legacy and 3D Towers
For tabletop enthusiasts, the project is especially notable for its pedigree. The King’s Gambit is a major reimagining of the legendary 2000 board game Star Wars: The Queen’s Gambit, copies of which regularly sell for hundreds of dollars on the secondary market. Original lead designer Rob Daviau adapted the proven parallel-battle system from The Phantom Menace’s finale to Middle-earth, completely overhauling deckbuilding and tactical decision-making for modern strategy standards.
The production values match the scale: the premium edition includes over 150 detailed miniatures of infantry, cavalry, and monsters, while multi-level plastic structures of Minas Tirith and Mordor’s Black Gate stand along the edges of the board. Rather than serving as mere set dressing, the towers function as fully playable zones where defenders can be stationed.
Is the $200 Pre-Order Worth It?
Backing the deluxe edition on the Kickstarter campaign page will cost $199, with fulfillment scheduled for 2027. The campaign runs through October 20, 2026.
However, players do not have to splurge on a massive box of plastic miniatures. As the developers confirmed in an interview with Wargamer, a standard edition will hit retail worldwide in 2027 via Asmodee. The retail version will feature cardboard components and a more compact footprint while keeping the exact same rules and scenarios, bringing the iconic gameplay to a wider audience.
