Concepts Show What ChatGPT Would Look Like on Windows 98, XP, Vista, and 7

A viral set of concept images envisions ChatGPT running inside four classic Windows interfaces, spanning from Windows 98 to Windows 7. The creator didn’t actually run the modern AI chatbot on legacy operating systems; these are generated images imagining what ChatGPT might have looked like had it arrived decades earlier.

Reddit user Midnight_Sun_BR shared the series on October 10. To generate the visuals, they used ChatGPT alongside Moon Image Cortex, their own open-source visual instruction framework.

Each mockup mirrors its era’s aesthetic. The Windows 98 version looks like a bare-bones Q&A page in Netscape Navigator with gray toolbars, compact UI controls, and dense layouts. Windows XP gets its signature saturated colors, gradients, and beveled buttons; Vista adopts a dark theme with Aero Glass effects; and Windows 7 looks cleaner, closer to modern desktop software.

The creator favored the Vista mockup the most. In the comments, users have also been reminiscing about Aero, sharing Clippy memes, and recalling early web services.

Moon Image Cortex Sets the Style but Doesn’t Draw Images Itself

There is an important detail: Moon Image Cortex is not a standalone image generator. According to the project’s GitHub repository, it functions as a visual instruction system that guides AI models to match a specific era’s design language—including window architecture, UI density, typography, buttons, gradients, and other signature elements.

The project includes dedicated visual sub-styles for Windows 98, XP, Vista, and 7. The Vista preset, for instance, defaults to a custom Ultimate Black design with dark glass elements. The developer notes that this is an artistic interpretation of the period rather than an attempt to replicate a specific official Windows theme with exact precision.

As a result, the renders work best as retrofuturistic concepts rather than period-accurate UI reconstructions.

The real ChatGPT arrived long after all four operating systems were retired. OpenAI released it as a research preview on November 30, 2022. By then, Windows 98 and XP were distant memories, and Windows 7 had gone nearly three years without regular Microsoft support.

That is where the project’s appeal lies: dropping a familiar modern product into an era when web apps felt fundamentally different—transforming ChatGPT’s minimal interface into software straight out of the late 1990s or 2000s.
