More Than Just a Chatbot: OpenAI Rolls Out Free GPT-6 with In-Chat Interactive Widgets

OpenAI has begun a global rollout of its next-generation GPT-6 language model to all ChatGPT users, including those on free plans. The release marks a fundamental shift in how people interact with the service: powered by Intelligent UI technology, the AI is no longer just a text-based conversationalist. The chatbot can now compile interactive interfaces on the fly—functional calculators with sliders, clickable maps, clear charts, and even simple mini-games directly within the chat stream.

The major update kicked off on October 7, 2026, launching first for paid subscribers before expanding to base Free accounts and the Go tier.

Generating Interfaces Instead of Walls of Text

Previously, ChatGPT answered complex calculations or instructions with text lists, tables, or static images. Intelligent UI changes that dynamic: the algorithm independently decides when users would be better served by a visual, interactive control.

Instead of passively reading answers, users can now interact with generated software in real time:

• when calculating a loan or investment, the bot displays a financial calculator with interactive sliders for interest rates and terms;
• for trip-planning requests, a map appears with a plotted route and cards for key stops;
• when splitting a restaurant bill, it generates a form to distribute expenses among multiple people;
• for studying physics or biology, the AI builds an interactive anatomy diagram or a review quiz.

Creating these tools requires no code—users simply describe the task in plain language. The widgets are assembled from ChatGPT’s native UI modules and begin rendering on screen before the model even finishes writing its accompanying text.

Model Lineup and Faster Initial Responses

Beyond the visual layer, engineers overhauled the model’s output architecture. The system can now deliver initial useful data while simultaneously analyzing sources and launching helper tools. According to internal testing, GPT-6 Instant surfaces the first fragment of an answer to search queries 44% faster than its predecessor, GPT-5.6 Instant.

Access to the new generation is divided into tiers:

• Free accounts and Go subscribers gain access to the lightweight GPT-6 Luna model;
• Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers get the more capable GPT-6 Sol;
• the flagship GPT-6 Astra remains exclusive to Pro mode, but does not yet support UI generation.

As noted in OpenAI’s official documentation, interactive mode works across the web browser and mobile apps, but is disabled in voice chat and the ChatGPT Work environment. If desired, users can reduce the number of visual modules in their personalization settings.

With Intelligent UI, the platform takes a decisive step toward on-demand dynamic software. Instead of visiting specialized websites just to run mortgage numbers, convert units, or plot statistics, users get a ready-to-use microservice directly in the chat within seconds.

That said, widget complexity remains limited to basic scenarios for now, and the accuracy of underlying formulas and financial calculations still requires human verification. The mass rollout is proceeding in stages and will reach all users over the coming days.
