ChatGPT Can Now ‘Try On’ Clothes From a Photo: How the New Feature Works and Why It Won’t Save You From the Wrong Size

OpenAI keeps turning its chatbot into a full-fledged shopping assistant. As of October 1, 2026, ChatGPT’s web version and mobile apps offer a virtual try-on feature for clothes and accessories. Users just upload a selfie or a full-length photo, and the ChatGPT Images generator creates a realistic image of how the chosen item would look on their figure.

The tool is tightly integrated into the built-in store search. When browsing products in the results, a Try on button appears that starts the generation. That said, you don’t have to stick to partner listings: according to TechCrunch, users can simply send a photo of a jacket or glasses they like from a third-party site into the chat and ask the bot to “put” them on.

A Personal Wardrobe and Saved Looks

So you don’t have to upload your photos again before every purchase, the developers added system memory for your appearance. The service’s official help page explains that good photos can be saved as a permanent reference in the account personalization menu.

At the same time, the interface now has bookmarks familiar from marketplaces. Items you like can be saved to a favorites list or sorted into themed folders in an internal library so you can come back to the purchase later. The full list of new features is published in the OpenAI release notes.

The Technology’s Limits: Judging Style, Not Patterns

Despite the visual clarity, the new feature doesn’t replace a real physical fitting. The AI assesses color combinations, the cut and the overall impression of a look, but it doesn’t analyze the actual physical dimensions of the fabric.

The company explicitly warns shoppers: the generated image doesn’t guarantee a proper fit and may smooth over small details of the cut. Before paying for an order, you still need to check the specific seller’s size chart, read reviews and check the return policy. Even so, for online retail this is a noticeable step forward: the ability to instantly see an item on yourself significantly lowers the psychological barrier to buying clothes online.
