‘Barry’ and ‘Office Space’ Star Stephen Root Confirms Role in GTA VI

American actor Stephen Root (Barry, Office Space, No Country for Old Men) has publicly confirmed his involvement in Grand Theft Auto VI. The actor lent his voice and likeness to Brian Heder, an elderly smuggler from the Leonida Keys resort region who is closely connected to the criminal affairs of protagonist Jason.
First Confirmed Cast Member
The confirmation came while the actor was speaking with reporters at Emmy Award events. As reported by GTA BOOM, Root enthusiastically commented on his work on the project: “I’m thrilled to be part of this game. It’s something incredible.”
Fans of the franchise recognized Stephen Root’s distinctive raspy voice back in the game’s second official trailer. However, publisher Rockstar Games traditionally keeps its cast strictly under wraps until launch, making Root the first veteran Hollywood actor to officially confirm his involvement in the project.
Who Is Brian Heder in the Game’s Story
In character descriptions on the official Rockstar Games promo portal, Brian Heder is described as a seasoned illicit cargo trader. Along with his third wife, Lori, he runs a boatyard in the island county of Leonida Keys, using the workshop as a convenient cover for maritime smuggling.
Media outlets often describe the character as Jason’s “mentor,” though their relationship is purely business-driven:
- Brian let Jason stay in one of his staff apartments for free;
- In return, the protagonist acts as muscle, carrying out dangerous errands for the old man and eliminating competitors.
As PC Gamer writers noted, Heder’s storyline will introduce players to watercraft, speedboats, and smuggling routes through tropical mangrove shallows.
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
