Volkswagen Unveils Mission Efficiency With Record 0.158 Cd — EV Consumes Under 7 kWh per 100 km

German automaker Volkswagen has unveiled the Mission Efficiency experimental electric car, designed to showcase the energy-saving limits of its MEB+ platform. The teardrop-shaped concept achieved a record-low drag coefficient of Cd 0.158 for road vehicles and averaged under 7 kWh per 100 km during a real-world drive from Wolfsburg to Vienna.

Teardrop body, aerodynamic wheel covers, and 30% energy savings

To cut aerodynamic drag, engineers turned to extreme measures: extending the rear of the body to 4.78 meters, fully enclosing the underbody with smooth panels, covering the rear wheel arches with solid spats, and installing active cooling flaps. The car’s frontal area measures 2.08 m².

According to a Volkswagen Newsroom press release, at speeds above 80 km/h, aerodynamics deliver more than 30% in net energy savings compared to standard hatchbacks. On the autobahn at 140 km/h, the prototype requires the exact same amount of energy a production hatchback consumes at 100 km/h.

Engineers integrated 370 W solar panels into the roof and rear glass, capable of adding up to 30 km of range on a sunny day.

ID. Polo internals and a real-world 1,278 km drive

Underneath, the concept relies on production components from the upcoming ID. Polo compact EV: a front-wheel-drive MEB+ architecture, an APP290 electric motor generating 135 hp (99 kW), and a standard 54.9 kWh traction battery.

As detailed in the Mission Efficiency technical specification sheet, the chassis’s efficiency was evaluated during a real-world 1,278 km road test from Wolfsburg to Vienna:

  • The car traveled at an average speed of 67.7 km/h in normal traffic flow;
  • Average energy consumption reached a record 6.89 kWh/100 km (7.51 kWh including charging station losses);
  • The vehicle completed the entire two-country route with just a single charging stop, finishing with 164 km of remaining range.

Despite its futuristic silhouette, the coupe retains a 2+2 seating layout and a full-size 481-liter trunk. The Mission Efficiency won’t enter mass production; the project was built as a rolling lab to test aerodynamic techniques that Volkswagen plans to implement in future generations of mainstream ID. EVs.
