Enthusiast Gets Android 13 Running on reMarkable Paper Pro, Bringing Kindle and OneNote to the Color E Ink Tablet

Blogger Chalid Raqami has ported a full version of Android 13 to the reMarkable Paper Pro, turning the minimalist digital notebook into a versatile E Ink reader that supports third-party mobile apps.

By default, the device runs on the closed reMarkable OS based on the Linux kernel, which is designed solely for reading documents and taking handwritten notes. The enthusiast’s project addresses the platform’s key issue — its closed ecosystem. Android doesn’t replace the native firmware, though: the tablet is set up in dual-boot mode, allowing users to switch between the base system and Android in about 20 seconds.

Apps, stylus, and battery life

As Android Authority notes, the reMarkable Paper Pro now supports a full set of basic features:

  • Wireless and peripherals: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth (including external keyboards), USB connectivity, and screen brightness adjustment all work properly.
  • Software: the tablet runs the Amazon Kindle app, Microsoft OneNote, browsers, and audiobook players.
  • Minimal pen latency: a special input mode was developed for the stylus, ensuring fast response in third-party apps.

The tablet’s modest hardware — an NXP i.MX 8M Mini processor (4 Cortex-A53 cores) and just 2 GB of RAM — wasn’t originally intended for a heavy OS. To achieve smooth performance, the author had to manually enable hardware GPU acceleration, configure memory allocation, and set up custom e-ink refresh modes.

The enthusiast also tackled battery drain: by fine-tuning the deep sleep mode (deep sleep), standby power consumption was reduced from 3% to 0.3% per hour, preserving the device’s typical week-long E Ink battery life.

Limitations and public release

According to 9to5Google, the modification hasn’t been released publicly yet. It requires enabling developer mode, and official reMarkable OS updates could break the bootloader.

The project’s creator is currently refining the installer and developing a safe recovery mechanism before opening the port to the public.
