Ferrari Patents Movable Taillights for Active Supercar Aerodynamics

Italian automaker Ferrari has developed an unusual active airflow management system that combines taillights with aerodynamic flaps. According to a patent application published on Justia Patents on August 20, 2026, the car’s taillights can physically shift while driving to adjust downforce.

The filing describes a design titled Sport Road Vehicle With Variable Rear Aerodynamic Load.

Airflow Extension and Diffuser Control

In their default position, the LED light assemblies are hidden beneath the spoiler, functioning as standard taillights and brake lights. During high-speed maneuvering or hard braking, an electric actuator pushes the light housing backward and upward directly into the oncoming airflow. In this position, the light unit acts as a spoiler, increasing downforce on the rear axle.

In an alternative configuration, engineers propose placing the lights inside flow-through aerodynamic channels between the body and the diffuser. By altering the angle of the taillight, onboard electronics regulate the channel’s cross-sectional area and the rate of underbody airflow extraction, effectively serving as an active flap.

Independent Cornering Control

A key feature of the patent is independent control of the left and right light modules:

  • In high-speed corners, the system can extend the light assembly on just one side, targeting downforce to either the outer or inner rear wheel;
  • Integrating light units into movable aerodynamic elements eliminates the need for bulky fixed rear wings while preserving sleek body styling.

The inventors are listed as engineers Salvatore Sedda and Jason Lopes Furtado. While registering the concept does not mean the technology will immediately appear on production sports cars from Maranello, it highlights Ferrari’s push toward hidden active aerodynamics for its future hypercars.
