Filming Starts on New ‘Mummy’ Movie as Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz Return After 25 Years

The iconic duo of Rick and Evelyn O’Connell is returning to the big screen. Production on the next installment of “The Mummy” adventure franchise kicked off on September 7, with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz reprising their lead roles. Fraser personally announced the start of filming during an appearance at the Deauville Film Festival.

Reunion of the Core Trio and ‘Scream’ Directors

In an interview with Canal+, the actor revealed that he begins shooting on Monday morning. This marks the first time Fraser and Weisz will share the screen as the married archeologists since 2001’s “The Mummy Returns”—Weisz did not appear in 2008’s third entry, “Tomb of the Dragon Emperor,” where the role of Evelyn was recast with Maria Bello.

John Hannah has also joined the project. As confirmed by Variety, the Scottish actor will reprise his role as Jonathan Carnahan, Evelyn’s hapless brother, reuniting the franchise’s original core trio.

Directorial duties have been entrusted to Radio Silence duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (“Ready or Not,” “Scream VI”). David Coggeshall (“The Family Plan”) wrote the screenplay, while Fraser himself serves as an executive producer.

Universal is keeping plot details under wraps, and the studio has not confirmed circulating online synopses about saving a banker’s daughter from an ancient curse. Filming will primarily take place at studio soundstages in the UK and on location in Morocco.

Release Date Shifted Up to Fall 2027

The film’s final title has not yet been finalized—the project is listed as “The Mummy 4” on production sheets. The studio initially targeted a May 2028 release before revising its schedule. According to Variety, the premiere was bumped up by seven months to October 15, 2027.

Brendan Fraser previously admitted he had hoped to return to his beloved role for more than two decades. Following the failure of the 2017 Tom Cruise reboot, Universal executives abandoned plans for the “Dark Universe” and pivoted back to the classic swashbuckling tone with the fan-favorite original cast.
