Filming Wraps on Twilight of the Dead, George Romero’s Final Zombie Story

Filming on Twilight of the Dead wrapped in Kentucky in September 2026. The movie is based on a story George A. Romero developed before his death and is positioned as the final chapter of his zombie saga, which began in 1968 with Night of the Living Dead. Kate Beckinsale stars, according to Bloody Disgusting.

She is joined by Betty Gabriel, Abigail London, John D. Hickman, Kurt Daimer, Phil Burke, Cooper Barnes and Tate Fletcher. Brothers Doron and Yoav Paz, known for the horror films Jerusalem and The Golem, directed, while Ho Sung Pak handled stunt and action choreography.

The plot unfolds on a ruined Earth, where the remnants of humanity find themselves caught between warring factions and the still-evolving threat of the living dead. Romero wrote the original treatment with Paolo Zelati, and Zelati, Joe Knetter and Robert L. Lucas later turned the material into a screenplay.

The project reached production after several team changes

For Twilight of the Dead, finishing production was an achievement in itself. The project spent years in development and changed noticeably along the way: Milla Jovovich was originally set to star, with Brad Anderson in the director’s chair. That version never made it to production — in 2026, Beckinsale replaced Jovovich and the Paz brothers took over directing.

The connection to Romero’s own films goes beyond the script and his heirs. Special effects are overseen by Greg Nicotero, who began his career on Day of the Dead in 1985 and went on to work with Romero many times. The director’s widow, Suzanne Romero, is also involved in the production. Dread Central has more on the team.

“Final” doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the franchise

Romero directed six films in his main Dead saga, from Night of the Living Dead to Survival of the Dead, released in 2009. He conceived Twilight of the Dead as the conclusion to that story.

That said, the producers have not ruled out more films in the same universe if the new movie performs well. In other words, the “final chapter” refers primarily to the story Romero himself envisioned, not necessarily to the franchise’s entire future.

Magenta Light Studios has acquired theatrical distribution rights for the film in the US and Canada, with The Syndicate handling international sales. A release date has not yet been announced.
