First Game of Thrones Movie Lands in 2029 – Warner Bros. to Adapt Aegon Targaryen’s Conquest

Warner Bros. has set the premiere of Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest for June 1, 2029. The film will be the first full-length theatrical release in the Game of Thrones universe, which until now has played out on screen mainly as HBO series.

The story centers on Aegon I Targaryen, better known as Aegon the Conqueror. Roughly 300 years before the events of the original Game of Thrones, he began his conquest of Westeros alongside his sisters and wives Visenya and Rhaenys.

The three Targaryens used the dragons Balerion, Vhagar and Meraxes to subdue six of the seven kingdoms. Dorne remained independent and joined the Targaryen realm much later.

Warner Bros. first announced the film’s title at CinemaCon 2026, and the project has now been given a specific release date.

Black Mirror director to helm the film

Owen Harris has been tapped to direct Aegon’s Conquest. He worked on Black Mirror, including the episodes “Be Right Back” and “San Junipero,” and also directed several episodes of another project set in George R. R. Martin’s universe, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

The script is being written by Beau Willimon, creator of the American version of House of Cards and one of the writers on Andor.

Willimon has been attached to the film version of the project since early 2026. Before that, Aegon’s conquest was indeed being developed for HBO in a different format: in 2024, writer Mattson Tomlin, co-writer of The Batman Part II, was working on a potential series.

Warner Bros.’ film project ultimately got a different creative team and turned into a standalone feature film.

The story will be drawn from Fire & Blood

Aegon’s conquest is described in detail by George R. R. Martin in the book Fire & Blood, which chronicles the history of House Targaryen.

It is there that the story is told of Aegon’s landing in Westeros, the burning of Harrenhal, the battle on the Field of Fire, the creation of the Iron Throne and the formation of the realm that Targaryen descendants ruled for nearly three centuries.

The new film will go much further back in time than House of the Dragon: that series begins roughly a century after the conquest.

Warner Bros. has not yet released a detailed synopsis, so it is unclear which part of Aegon’s campaign the film will cover and how large a role Visenya and Rhaenys will play.

No cast announced yet

Casting for the main roles has not been officially revealed. It is also unknown who will play Aegon himself, his sisters and other key figures of the era.

According to People, production is in the preparatory stage, and Warner Bros. has not yet announced details of the shooting schedule.

Aegon’s Conquest will be an important experiment for the franchise: for the first time, a story from the Game of Thrones world will be designed from the outset for the big screen rather than for HBO’s multi-episode format.

Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest premieres on June 1, 2029.
