Netflix has released the debut trailer for the documentary “Schumacher ’94 – The Birth of a Legend.” The project focuses on the 1994 Formula 1 season — one of the most dramatic, controversial, and difficult in the history of motorsport. The film is set to premiere on October 2, 2026.
A title fight overshadowed by death
The film follows 25-year-old Michael Schumacher’s path to his first championship title with Benetton. That season forever split the history of Formula 1: at the May race in Imola, within a single weekend, Austrian Roland Ratzenberger and three-time world champion Ayrton Senna — a hero to millions — were both killed.
The sudden loss of the favorite intensified the behind-the-scenes regulatory battles. Schumacher faced a series of harsh penalties during the championship: he was disqualified twice and suspended from two more races. The title fight went down to the final round in Adelaide, Australia, where a controversial collision with Damon Hill’s car took both drivers out, and Michael clinched the title by just one point.
Personal archives and the flip side of “Schumi-mania”
The film is produced by LEONINE Documentaries and directed by Christine Freitag. As detailed in the announcement from LEONINE Studios, the project combines closed television footage from the 1990s with exclusive interviews from those who witnessed the rivalry firsthand.
Those appearing on camera include former Benetton team principal Flavio Briatore, former championship promoter Bernie Ecclestone, driver David Coulthard, and Schumacher’s manager Willi Weber. A separate segment is dedicated to the memories of Michael’s wife, Corinna Schumacher, who spoke about how the couple coped with the immense media pressure and the rise of a global cult around Michael.

In 2021, Netflix released a major documentary simply titled “Schumacher,” but it covered the champion’s entire career. The new project, as noted by Motorsport.com, focuses exclusively on 1994, exploring the controversial stewards’ decisions, the grief of loss, and the birth of a motorsport legend without shying away from the sharp edges.
