Netflix has put a live-action television series based on the iconic Dungeons & Dragons tabletop universe into production. The project, titled Ravenloft, will blend dark fantasy, classic gothic horror, and tragic drama, with Count Strahd von Zarovich — one of the franchise’s most recognizable villains — as the central character.

The story will chronicle Strahd’s downfall, tracing his journey from a tragic warlord to the world’s first vampire and sole ruler of the grim land of Barovia, where power and unrequited love intertwine with dark magic.

Creative Team and Netflix’s Shift in Direction

John August, known for writing the screenplays for “Big Fish,” “Corpse Bride,” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” will serve as showrunner, lead writer, and executive producer. Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuarón (“Children of Men,” “Gravity”) will share producing duties, while Gabriel Marano will oversee production on behalf of rights holder Hasbro.

According to Yahoo News, the greenlight for Ravenloft has led to the cancellation of another project. The previously announced Netflix series The Forgotten Realms, from showrunner Drew Crevello and producer Shawn Levy, has been officially scrapped. The streaming service has opted to move away from classic high fantasy in favor of a darker, more intimate gothic tone.

The Legacy of Ravenloft

The Ravenloft setting first appeared in Dungeons & Dragons in 1983, with an adventure module by Tracy and Laura Hickman. Over time, the tale of the misty Domains of Dread and Castle Ravenloft grew into a standalone universe with dozens of books and game supplements. The modern campaign Curse of Strahd, for the game’s fifth edition, has become one of the most popular among players worldwide.

The series is currently in early pre-production. Casting for key roles, the choice of director for the pilot episodes, and a premiere date have yet to be announced.
