‘Squid Game’ Creator to Direct Generational Warfare Thriller ‘K.O. Club’ Starring Lee Byung-hun

Squid Game director and writer Hwang Dong-hyuk is returning to feature films with sci-fi thriller K.O. Club (Killing Oldmen Club). Global South Korean star Lee Byung-hun will play the lead role in a story set in a dystopian future where a wealthy ruling elite buys eternal youth, sparking a fierce generational war.

K.O. Club Plot: Ageless Billionaires and a Lost Generation

The project’s full working title stands for Killing Oldmen Club.

According to Korean news agency Yonhap, the film is set in the near future, where biotechnology allows wealthy individuals to literally freeze their biological age. As a result, an aging financial elite maintains absolute power along with a monopoly on resources and real estate, refusing to yield ground. The younger generation finds itself completely pushed out of the economy and society, ultimately leading to an explosion of radical violence.

According to the director, the film explores the limits of social stratification and could end up being significantly harsher and more uncompromising than Squid Game.

Umberto Eco’s Philosophy and Social Grotesque

The project’s concept was born long before its success on Netflix. In an interview with Tatler Asia, Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed that he drew inspiration from a satirical essay by Italian thinker Umberto Eco, “How Old People Survive,” which explored scenarios of demographic deadlocks.

The director draws direct parallels to modern reality: rising housing prices, increasing life expectancy, and the 2016 Brexit referendum, when a conservative majority determined the fate of the younger generation. In K.O. Club, these social contradictions will be pushed to a grotesque dystopian extreme.

Star Ensemble: Reconnecting ‘Squid Game’ and ‘Parasite’ Alums

According to Soompi, the film has assembled a powerhouse cast of modern Korean cinema:

• Lee Byung-hun — lead role (The Front Man in Squid Game, historical drama The Fortress);
• Park Hae-soo — star of Squid Game Season 1 (Cho Sang-woo) and thriller Narco-Saints;
• Cho Yeo-jeong — played Mrs. Park in Bong Joon-ho’s Oscar-winning Parasite;
• Oh Jung-se (It’s Okay to Not Be Okay, Sweet Home);
• Kim So-jin (Emergency Declaration, The King).

Director’s First Feature Film in a Decade

For Hwang Dong-hyuk, K.O. Club marks his first feature film since the 2017 historical epic The Fortress.

As noted by The Korea Times, the director personally wrote the original screenplay. Production is handled by his own banner, Firstman Studio, co-founded with Squid Game executive producer Kim Ji-yeon.

According to Screen Daily, filming starts in the first half of 2027. The official release date and distribution partner will be announced following completion of production.
