The Lord of the Rings: War in the North — Legacy Edition Surprise-Launches with Updated Graphics and Co-op

Aspyr has surprise-released a remaster of the co-op action game The Lord of the Rings: War in the North — Legacy Edition. The game, which was delisted in 2019 due to expired licenses, is back on PC and is now available for the first time on modern consoles including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.

The original action game from Snowblind Studios launched in 2011. In the Legacy Edition remaster, the developers have upscaled textures using neural networks, added support for high resolutions, and increased the frame rate. The game now includes official Russian subtitles, fully restored online co-op, and for the first time, a split-screen mode on PC. Additionally, in single-player mode, you can now freely switch between characters on the fly.

Story and Key Characters

The game’s events unfold parallel to the Fellowship of the Ring’s journey to Mordor. While Frodo carries the One Ring, a trio of heroes heads to the North of Middle-earth to stop the antagonist Agandaûr — a Black Númenórean and servant of Sauron who is amassing an army among the ruins of Fornost.

Gameplay revolves around team-based cooperation between three characters with unique abilities:

• Eradan: a human Ranger specializing in bows, stealth, dual blades, and sword-and-shield combat;
• Andriel: an Elven sorceress who creates protective domes and uses battle magic;
• Farin: a Dwarf champion relying on heavy melee weapons and powerful crossbows.

The game is now available on Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG, as well as on consoles. The base price of The Lord of the Rings: War in the North — Legacy Edition is $19.99, with a temporary 10% launch discount on all platforms.
