The Perfect Fan-Made Porsche 959: Mattel Releases Collector Hot Wheels Designed by the Community

Mattel has opened orders for the Hot Wheels RLC Exclusive sELECTIONs Porsche 959, a 1:64-scale collector model. The release’s key feature is that fans designed the miniature’s appearance from start to finish. In a series of votes among members of the closed Red Line Club, the Porsche 959 beat out other candidates with 41.74% of the vote, after which the collector community settled on its body color and wheel type.

The miniature has a fully metal body made from the company’s signature ZAMAC alloy, painted in a rich Spectraflame Purple that contrasts with the beige interior. The product page notes that the sports car is the first to use Real Riders BB wheels with gold hubs and silver rims. The chassis is also metal, and under the opening rear cover the engineers hid a detailed replica of the original flat-six engine.

The model comes on a classic illustrated card, additionally packed in a rigid clear Kar Keepers blister for protection during shipping. The company does honestly warn, however, that the site currently shows only high-quality 3D renders, so the actual shade of the purple paint on the production car may differ slightly from the images.

An Unlimited Run in Exchange for a Year’s Wait

Exclusive Hot Wheels releases are usually snapped up by scalpers in seconds, but the sELECTIONs line works differently — on a made-to-order basis. Orders are open from September 22 to October 6, 2026, with no strict limit on the number of copies per person. That solves the shortage problem but creates a new one: because of the made-to-order process, shipping the finished cars can take up to a year from the moment an order is placed.

The miniature itself is priced at $28, but regular site visitors can’t buy it. Preorders are open exclusively to current Red Line Club members. Those who want to add this Porsche to their collection but aren’t yet part of the community will have to pay an additional $9.99 annual digital subscription.
