MIT’s Next-Gen Controller Lets Novices Operate Heavy Excavators Like Pros

MIT engineers, together with Japan’s Sumitomo Heavy Industries, have developed an innovative controller called the World-Space Interface (WSI), designed to completely replace traditional joysticks in heavy construction equipment cabs. Instead of coordinating two separate levers, operators directly move a miniature articulated arm and bucket by hand.
According to the MIT News Office, an onboard computer automatically tracks the manipulator’s spatial position and instantly translates hand movements into proportional commands for the machine’s hydraulic drives.
Novices Worked 37% Faster on Their First Try
The main issue with traditional excavators is their unintuitive control interface, which requires 3 to 5 years of regular practice for operators to naturally map joystick inputs to the independent joints of a multi-ton boom.
To test the WSI interface, researchers built a full-scale simulator featuring six panoramic screens and 15 realistic environments, including quarries, highways, forest debris zones, and urban construction sites. Test subjects with no prior experience leveled trenches, crushed rocks, and loaded gravel.
According to a study published in the Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering, novices completed work cycles 37% faster using the WSI controller on their first attempt compared to traditional joysticks, nearly matching the productivity of operators who had completed a week-long training course.
Remote Control in Hazardous Zones and Haptic Feedback
The development addresses severe labor shortages and an aging workforce among heavy equipment operators in the construction industry. The spatial controller opens up wide possibilities for remote operation:
- Safe demolition: operators can work from a remote mobile office and control an excavator with pinpoint precision during debris clearing, building collapses, or disaster response;
- Force feedback: in the next phase, engineers plan to integrate electric motors with haptic feedback into the controller, allowing operators to physically feel soil density and rock resistance in their palm as the bucket scoops.
Deploying WSI technology will allow construction companies to assign general workers to heavy equipment operation without requiring years of specialized training.
