Scientists Determine Which Breast Proportions Are Most Attractive: It’s Not About Size

A study by Brazilian scientists has shown that balanced proportions and neat details play a decisive role in assessing the attractiveness of female breasts, rather than their overall volume. The work refutes viral headlines on social media claiming that “small breasts have been recognized as the most beautiful” — the researchers did not even evaluate the absolute cup size.
The scientific experiment, published in the journal Revista Brasileira de Cirurgia Plástica, involved 239 medical students from a university in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (72.4% women and 27.6% men). Participants were asked to compare various graphic models and choose the options they considered most harmonious.
Balance of Poles and Nipple Position
The majority of respondents preferred an even distribution of volume: 61.1% of participants named a 50/50 ratio of the upper and lower parts of the breast as the most attractive. The classic teardrop shape with a 40/60 proportion was chosen by 29.7% of respondents, while the variant with a predominance of the upper pole (60/40) received only 9.2% of the votes.
Additionally, 59.83% of participants preferred the central placement of the nipple-areola complex, and 83.68% considered its compact diameter the most aesthetic. It was this point about the size of the areola that caused confusion in retellings of the study: it was exclusively about the nipple, not about the parameters of the bust as a whole.
No Difference Found Between Men and Women
According to the findings posted in the scientific database SciELO, the perception of aesthetics was practically independent of the participants’ gender: the criteria for harmony in men and women coincided without statistically significant deviations.
At the same time, the authors of the work remind about the limitations of the sample. The results reflect the preferences of a specific group of young people with medical education in one region of Brazil, so it is still premature to apply these data as a universal global standard for plastic surgery.
