Scientists Find Way to Trigger Lucid Dreams — Over Half of Participants Realized They Were Dreaming

An international team of neuroscientists from Canada, the Netherlands, and Italy has developed an effective protocol for inducing lucid dreams. Combining a preliminary half-hour training session with gentle sensory cues during REM sleep enabled 51.7% of study participants to become aware inside a dream and signal researchers. The findings were published as a preprint on bioRxiv.

Sixty volunteers participated in the study, most of whom had rarely or never experienced lucid dreams before. Each participant underwent two morning sleep sessions in the laboratory.

Before falling asleep, participants completed a 30-minute cognitive preparation session: with their eyes closed, they learned to associate a combination of three stimuli — red light flashes through their eyelids, a quiet melody, and a vibration on their forehead — with a mental reality check (“Am I dreaming right now?”).

Participants then fell asleep wearing a portable ZMax EEG headband. As soon as the sensors detected the onset of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, the device played the familiar cues.

To rule out false memories after waking up, participants were trained to send a command directly from within the dream: upon realizing they were dreaming, they performed a series of rapid left-to-right eye movements. These movements were recorded by electrooculogram sensors. As a result, 31 out of 60 participants successfully transmitted a confirmed signal from inside a dream.

Why it’s not an instant solution and the outlook for PTSD

Media reports often frame the results as the creation of a ready-made device for controlling dreams. However, the researchers emphasize that external sensors alone do not work without prior psychological training.

The difference in the frequency of lucid episodes between sessions with stimulation and control tests without it was 38.3% versus 28.3%. The main advantage of the audio-visual cues was maintaining the state: the cues prevented dreamers from losing focus, increasing the overall duration of the lucid episode.

As reported by New Scientist, the technique is of interest not only for entertainment, but also for psychotherapy. In the future, portable EEG masks could help patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) become aware during recurring nightmares and voluntarily change the frightening scenario. The authors’ next step will be adapting the algorithms for consumer wearable headbands designed for home use.
