Dyson Launches $500 Toothbrush With Camera and AI That Targets Gaps Between Teeth With Precision Jets

British company Dyson has set out to rethink oral care with the launch of its CameraJet electric toothbrush. The standout feature of the $500 device is a macro camera built into the brush head combined with computer vision algorithms that detect interdental gaps in real time and automatically shoot a targeted jet of mouthwash into them.

According to Dyson’s official announcement, its Gap Optical Targeting system identifies the target area and dispenses liquid in under 100 milliseconds. The 100,000-pixel camera captures 28 frames per second, while the neural network was trained on a dataset of over 470,000 dental images. Developing the device took six years and 16 million lines of code.

Dispelling the Main Myth About the New Toothbrush

Viral videos often describe the new device as a gadget that “sees plaque and cleans it off by itself.” In reality, the AI addresses a different problem: the optics specifically track narrow gaps between teeth that are hardest to reach with conventional bristles, firing a targeted pulse of fluid into those spots.

Meanwhile, the companion MyDyson app lets users watch a live video stream of the process right from inside the mouth. The app builds a digital map of the jaw and highlights missed areas. To protect privacy, the video stream is not saved in memory and is not sent to the company’s servers.

Thoughtful Hydraulics and Specialized Toothpaste

The handle houses a compact 12.5 ml reservoir with a specialized pump that can deliver fluid even when the brush is held horizontally. The docking station not only recharges the battery but also automatically refills the tank in just three seconds.

The bristles vibrate at roughly 1,000 sonic oscillations per second. According to internal testing by the manufacturer, combining vibration with fluid cleaning removes up to 69% more plaque in hard-to-reach areas compared to standard premium toothbrushes.

Engineers had to formulate custom low-foaming toothpaste and mouthwash specifically for the device to prevent foam from obscuring the camera lens.

According to The Verge, the Dyson CameraJet launched in the US at $499.99. Despite the high price tag, portions of the initial launch batch in Ceramic Ultra Blue and Ceramic Pink sold out within the first few days.
