Netflix and Blizzard Entertainment have kicked off development on an animated series set in the dark fantasy universe of Diablo. Blizzard President Johanna Faries announced the joint production during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026.

Early Stage and the Atmosphere of Sanctuary

Rumors of a TV adaptation of the gloomy world of Sanctuary have been circulating in the industry for nearly a decade, but only now has the project been officially confirmed. According to Gematsu, the show is in early pre-production: the creators haven’t shared concept art or a teaser, keeping the writers, the animation studio, and a tentative release window under wraps.

The creators haven’t revealed whether the story will adapt events from a specific numbered entry in the franchise (such as the confrontation between Lilith and Inarius in Diablo IV) or follow an original storyline.

Choosing an adult animation format makes sense: Netflix has a strong track record with gothic video game adaptations like Castlevania, and a mature rating will allow the show to bring the source material’s signature gore, demonic lore, and bleak atmosphere to the screen.

Blizzard’s Cinematic Universe Under Microsoft

The announcement is part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to expand the studio’s key franchises into film and television. Company President Johanna Faries stated directly from the festival stage: “I promise, the Diablo adaptation is just the beginning.”

According to Video Games Chronicle (VGC), Blizzard management is holding preliminary talks with streaming services to create animated projects set in the Overwatch and Warcraft universes, aiming to replicate the success of Riot Games’ Arcane.

According to PC Gamer, fans shouldn’t expect an immediate premiere: producing high-budget animation of this scale typically takes 18 to 24 months, so the first footage and plot details won’t emerge until 2027 at the earliest.
