420K Concurrent Players and 1M Copies Sold in 24 Hours: Tactical Shooter WARDOGS Breaks Into Steam Top 3

Massive military action game WARDOGS, developed by British studio BULKHEAD and published by Team17, delivered one of Valve’s biggest launches of the year. Just days after launching in Early Access, the shooter reached a peak concurrent player count of over 400,000. It quickly locked in third place on Steam’s overall activity charts, trailing only platform staples Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2.
1.25 Million Copies Sold in One Day and Server Crashes
According to tracking data from Steam Charts, weekend peak activity reached 424,000 players, while SteamDB recorded a peak of 400,196 users.
Commercial reports backed up the massive interest. As reported by PC Gamer, the game sold over 1.25 million copies in its first 24 hours. For an original paid online shooter priced at $39.99, this is an outstanding result against a backdrop of closures among other multiplayer releases this year.
However, the September 10 launch was not without issues. The network infrastructure struggled under the surge of players, resulting in multi-hour login queues, crashes, and match desyncs. The technical problems instantly pushed the game’s initial user rating on the store down to “Mixed.” After developers urgently deployed additional server capacity, matchmaking stabilized, and user reviews quickly bounced back to “Very Positive” (84% positive).

Total Warfare Formula and Console Release
Players were drawn to the 100-player three-faction warfare concept, which combines the tactical depth of military simulators like Squad with the cinematic destruction of Battlefield. Battles take place across dynamic 2×2 km zones on a massive 256 km² map, while the loadout system relies on in-match cash earned in combat, spent on weapons, attachments, tanks, and transport helicopters before each respawn.
The game is available in Steam Early Access for $39.99. The developers plan to polish the project in Early Access for about two years, with plans to introduce jet fighters, new biomes, and customization options. A console port for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S is tentatively scheduled for 2028.
