Prison for 30 Volunteers: Netflix to Launch Reality Show Based on Stanford Prison Experiment

Streaming service Netflix has announced a reality show titled The New Stanford Prison Experiment, inspired by one of the most high-profile and controversial psychological studies of the 20th century. The six-part project will debut on the platform on October 21, 2026.
A Real Prison and 30 Volunteers
The show will feature 30 participants who will be placed in a closed correctional facility and randomly divided into two groups: “guards” and “prisoners.” Each episode will run approximately 45 minutes.
The show’s creators aim to examine human behavior within a strict hierarchy:
- Whether moral compasses and empathy can withstand the systemic pressure of a closed institution;
- How quickly people begin to abuse power over powerless cellmates;
- Whether spontaneous resistance and solidarity will emerge among the isolated participants.
The show is produced by Alfred Street Industries, led by reality TV producers Jane Lipsitz and Dan Cutforth.
Zimbardo’s Legacy and Scientific Criticism
The project draws on social psychologist Philip Zimbardo’s infamous 1971 study. As noted in materials from the Stanford Historical Society, 24 students were placed in a simulated prison in the university basement, but the planned two-week study had to be shut down on the sixth day due to the guards’ cruelty and prisoners’ emotional breakdowns.
Within the academic community, the original experiment long ago lost its status as an undisputed scientific fact. The Stanford Best Practices in Science research group points out that the 1971 experiment suffered from severe methodological flaws: supervisors actively encouraged guards to adopt tough measures, and independent replication attempts yielded different outcomes, including participants uniting against the experimenters.
The New Stanford Prison Experiment is a televised social experiment and entertainment reality show rather than a peer-reviewed scientific study. The creators will disclose the extent of scripted intervention and the participants’ psychological safety protocols closer to the fall premiere.
