An SUV Built for Extreme Off-Roading: Tank 300 Hooke Trail Debuts with Two Solid Axles

Great Wall Motor has unveiled the most uncompromising version of its popular Tank 300 SUV, dubbed the Hooke Trail. The vehicle gets a heavily reworked chassis: engineers ditched the standard independent front suspension in favor of a solid axle, making the new model a serious rival for deep aftermarket tuning straight from the factory. Official sales in China start on September 20, 2026.
Solid Axles, Articulation and 40-Inch Tires
While the standard Tank 300 rides on a double-wishbone front suspension, the Hooke Trail variant gets a one-piece front axle, a reinforced differential housing, new links and trailing arms. It works in tandem with a matching solid rear axle. According to the Autohome portal, the stiffness of the entire suspension structure is up 38%.
To handle rough terrain, there’s an electronically disconnecting sway bar. With it disconnected, axle articulation exceeds 500 mm, letting the wheels keep traction on rocks and in deep ruts.
As for the wheels, the model leaves the factory on 265/70 R18 tires. The designers built plenty of strength into the chassis: the wheel arch geometry allows 35-inch off-road tires to be fitted without major modifications, and if you want, the vehicle can be shod with extreme 40-inch tires (after additional body modifications).

Off-Road Numbers and a 231-HP Engine
The off-road capability is backed up by hard numbers:
- Ground clearance is up to 245 mm;
- Approach angle is 41 degrees, departure angle is 34 degrees;
- The vehicle confidently fords water up to 850 mm deep;
- Its geometric capability allows it to climb slopes of up to 70%.
Power comes from a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine rated at 231 hp (170 kW) and 400 N·m of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic. Off-road, a transfer case with a low-range gear and locking differentials help out. The transmission’s gear ratios are tuned for crawling (crawl ratio 63.5), allowing controlled progress through the toughest sections at minimum speed.
The SUV’s dimensions are more substantial than the standard version: length is up to 4886 mm, and the wheelbase stretches to 3010 mm. Standard equipment already includes a snorkel for protection against hydro lock, heavy-duty bumpers and recovery points for towing gear.
Larte Design and other tuners have long offered various body kits for the Tank 300, but the Hooke Trail marks the first time the factory has decided to prepare a base for heavy off-roading itself. Great Wall will reveal the price on the day sales begin, targeting the premium segment among extreme-travel enthusiasts.
