International medical studies have recorded an unprecedented surge in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnosis rates among adults. According to a research review on the PsyPost portal, over the past twenty years, the rate of initial diagnoses and accompanying prescription medication orders for adults has increased several times over, and in certain age groups — by dozens of times.
Medical statistics disprove the outdated stereotype that the disorder occurs exclusively in childhood.
Adult Patients Overtake Children in Prescriptions
UK data shows particularly strong dynamics: an analysis of records from 7.7 million patients revealed that between 2000 and 2018, the rate of new diagnoses among men aged 18–29 jumped 20-fold, while prescription medication rates rose 50-fold. Popularization across social media played a significant role. Videos on TikTok and YouTube helped millions realize that issues with focus, procrastination, and executive function can have a neurobiological origin.
However, authors of a study in JAMA Network Open warn against self-diagnosing through short videos: similar symptoms can stem from depression, anxiety disorders, or chronic stress, requiring a differential clinical evaluation.
