Chinese studio Hoothanes debuted a new trailer for the cinematic first-person shooter The Defiant at Gamescom 2026. Built on Unreal Engine 5, the game offers a perspective on World War II through the lens of the intense Asian theater of operations during the 1930s and 1940s.

The title is coming to PC and current-generation consoles.

A Unique Setting and Diverse Combat Objectives

Moving away from the familiar beaches of Normandy or the streets of Berlin, the narrative shifts to the Chinese front. The action takes place in occupied garrisons, war-torn cities, snow-covered forests, and behind-enemy-lines guerrilla bases. The story aims to depict the tragedy of war through the eyes of both soldiers and civilians.

The campaign is structured around a variety of tactical objectives:

  • Nighttime sabotage missions and stealthy patrol takedowns;
  • Positional sniper duels;
  • Full-scale assault operations using authentic weaponry, including Chinese Hanyang Type 88 rifles, Mauser C96 pistols, and MP18 submachine guns.

Unreal Engine 5, Co-op, and Platforms

According to Gematsu, the shooter will feature support for co-op play alongside the single-player mode, available via both online and local area network (LAN) connections.

As reported by MondoXbox, the developers have expanded the list of target platforms: the game will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

The project’s Steam page lists system requirements including approximately 100GB of free space on an SSD and basic support for a Russian interface. Hoothanes will announce the official release date at a later time.
