Gears of War: E-Day Gets Gamescom Story Trailer: Unreal Engine 5 Prequel Launches October 6

At Gamescom 2026, developer The Coalition and Xbox unveiled a new story trailer for the action game Gears of War: E-Day. The game, which focuses on the beginning of the Locust Horde’s full-scale invasion of humanity, will launch on October 6, 2026, for PC and Xbox Series X|S.
Premium Edition owners will get early access starting October 1.
Young Marcus and Dom at the Start of the War
The prequel is set 14 years before the original Gears of War. The story centers on a young Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as they find themselves at the epicenter of Emergence Day—the moment the underground Locust race first breaches the surface of Sera and destroys its cities.
According to the official announcement on Xbox Wire, the studio is returning the series to its dark roots, incorporating elements of psychological horror to emphasize human vulnerability in the face of a sudden catastrophe, alongside the story of the main characters’ friendship.

Four-Player Co-op and 12-Player Horde Siege Mode
Players can experience the campaign solo, in two-player local split-screen, or via online co-op for up to four players. Two additional playable characters, Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes, will join Bravo Squad.
According to multiplayer details, the online component will feature competitive Versus modes and a new take on Horde—12-player Horde Siege, where multiple squads simultaneously defend sectors of large maps, fight off waves of monsters, and push toward an extraction point.
Transition to Unreal Engine 5 and Game Pass Launch
The game is being built from the ground up on Unreal Engine 5. The developers have kept the signature cover-based gunplay while reworking melee animations, level verticality, and environmental destruction physics. On consoles, the game will support 4K resolution, 60 FPS, HDR, and hardware ray tracing.
The standard edition of Gears of War: E-Day will launch on October 6 on Steam, the Microsoft Store, and Xbox Series X|S. Xbox Game Pass subscribers can play the game on day one.
