Immersive Sim The Lift Gets Story Trailer About Repairing Mystical Strugatsky-Inspired Institute

Publisher tinyBuild and developer Fantastic Signals unveiled a story trailer for the mystical simulator The Lift during the tinyBuild Connect 2026 showcase. The unusual title combines meditative room cleaning and repair mechanics with a retrofuturistic atmosphere, SCP universe aesthetics, and narrative depth typical of the immersive sim genre. The game is scheduled for release in 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

Awakening in the Institute and the Spirit of the Strugatsky Brothers

Players step into the shoes of the Keeper, a staff maintenance engineer who wakes from suspended animation inside a massive abandoned Institute. Once a cutting-edge research facility, it suffered a mysterious anomalous disaster: the staff has vanished, the corridors are deteriorating, and the equipment has failed. The protagonist must restore the facility’s infrastructure step by step while uncovering the cause of the cataclysm.

In the description on The Lift’s Steam page, the developers emphasize that they drew inspiration from Soviet science fiction, though their main literary influence was not the grim “Roadside Picnic,” but the Strugatsky brothers’ novella “Monday Begins on Saturday.” The Institute is presented as a place where paranormal phenomena, magic, and anomalies were simply part of the daily scientific routine.

House Flipper Mechanics and Prey-Style Architecture

Gameplay centers on hands-on physical repairs. Players will solder microchips, lay power cables, balance electrical phases, and fix old terminals, supercomputers, hydroponics systems, and vending machines.

As the developers detailed on PlayStation.Blog, the game combines cleaning mechanics reminiscent of PowerWash Simulator with intricate system design inspired by Prey:

  • The cargo elevator cabin acts as a mobile base where players can craft tools, upgrade equipment, and travel between sealed sectors;
  • Key areas to restore include the Central Archive, Post Office, Radio Center, Library, and Nuclear Reactor.

The independent team at Fantastic Signals includes indie scene veterans who previously worked on Pathologic 2 and the platformer Ori and the Will of the Wisps.

According to Gematsu, the developers originally planned to release the game in 2026 exclusively on PC, but pushed the launch to 2027 to polish the game and allow for a simultaneous release on current-generation consoles.
