MGM+ Launches ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ with Kit Harington: Episode Schedule and Adaptation Details

MGM+ has premiered the miniseries “A Tale of Two Cities,” a new four-part adaptation of Charles Dickens’s classic novel. Kit Harington, star of “Game of Thrones,” not only plays one of the lead roles—the cynical lawyer Sydney Carton—but also serves as an executive producer on the project.

London, Paris, and Courtroom Intrigues

The historical drama opens in London in 1782. A young woman, Lucie Manette (Myrren Mack), learns that her father—whom the family had believed dead for nearly twenty years—is alive and secretly held in Paris. The only clue comes from a French émigré, Charles Darnay (François Civil), but he is arrested by British authorities on charges of espionage and high treason.

To get Darnay out of prison, Lucie turns to the talented but dissolute lawyer Sydney Carton. As noted in the description on TV Insider, the creators have faithfully preserved the book’s key themes: the love triangle, espionage conspiracies, and the inevitable clash of the characters with the chaos of the approaching French Revolution.

The miniseries was written by Daniel West, and all four episodes were directed by Richard Clark (“Outlander,” “Doctor Who”). The cast also includes Roxane Duran, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, and Yannick Renier.

Premiere Schedule and International Release Status

Social media has been abuzz with claims that MGM+ dropped nearly the entire season at once, with three episodes already available to viewers. That assertion is incorrect: the streamer is releasing the historical project on a traditional weekly schedule.

According to the schedule on Rotten Tomatoes, only the first hour-long episode, titled “Recalled to Life,” debuted on September 6. The rest of the story will roll out on Sundays:

• Episode 2 — September 13;
• Episode 3 — September 20;
• Final Episode 4 — September 27.

The project is a co-production with European company Federation Studios. In addition to MGM+, British broadcaster BBC and media conglomerate France Télévisions have acquired the television rights, with the series set to air in local dubbing closer to the end of autumn.
