Microsoft Files Patent Application for an Ad System Between Gaming Events

Microsoft has developed a concept for contextual advertising in PC and console games that would determine the right moment to show an ad and avoid interrupting users in the middle of a fight or another important scene.
This is not a finished Xbox feature yet, but a patent application US 2026/0260258 A1 titled Contextually Aware Management of Interactive Software Application Access. Microsoft filed it on April 23, 2026, and the USPTO published the document on September 3.
The system uses information about the current state of the game and waits for a natural pause. The application cites defeating a boss, completing a quest or level, the end of a cutscene, a loading screen, a menu, and the end of a round as examples.
The game can signal the system that a suitable moment has arrived, after which interaction with it is temporarily suspended, the user is shown a video or other promoted content, and then play resumes.
The Microsoft patent application itself describes the system more broadly than ordinary advertising – the document uses the term promoted audiovisual content. However, the most obvious commercial scenario for its use involves video ads.
Watching an ad buys the next uninterrupted stretch of play
The key element of the concept is so-called ad credits. Importantly, this is not an in-game currency or a way to get additional content.
A player first receives a certain period of uninterrupted access – for example, 30 minutes of play without ad breaks. When the credit runs out, the system does not have to stop what is happening immediately. It can wait for the nearest suitable moment, show an ad, and issue a new credit after it is viewed.
As TechSpot explains, a credit can be measured not only in time. An alternative is to tie it to game progress: completing a level, several rounds, a match, or another predetermined part of the game.
So the scheme looks roughly like this: a user plays without ads, reaches a natural pause, watches a video, and receives the next stretch of uninterrupted play.
In principle, this resembles rewarded ads in mobile free-to-play projects, but Microsoft proposes adapting the model for longer gaming sessions on PC and consoles.
This is not an announcement of a new Xbox feature yet
The application provides for analyzing game context, API signals, and events to choose when to show an ad. However, the document does not indicate that the system would necessarily use generative AI to create or personalize ads.
More importantly, Microsoft does not tie the technology to a specific game, Xbox, Game Pass, or a future subscription tier. The company has also not announced plans to introduce such advertising in its products.
The publication of the patent application shows that Microsoft has explored such a monetization model, but it does not guarantee a commercial launch. Many technologies that companies patent or apply for never end up in finished products.
