Neill Blomkamp’s Sci-Fi Cult Classic ‘District 9’ Is Now Available to Stream for Free

Director Neill Blomkamp’s sci-fi film «District 9» (District 9) has arrived on the free streaming service Pluto TV. Seventeen years after its premiere, the story of alien refugees in Johannesburg is drawing audience attention once again amid the prolonged wait for a sequel.
The movie is available to stream for free with ad breaks on the platform’s US version.
Alien Apartheid and Mockumentary Style
Released in 2009, Blomkamp’s feature debut—produced by Peter Jackson—combined classic sci-fi with elements of mockumentary, news broadcast footage, and surveillance cameras.
The plot centers on a spaceship hovering over South Africa whose occupants turn out not to be invaders, but malnourished refugees trapped in an isolated ghetto by human authorities. The protagonist, MNU corporate clerk Wikus van de Merwe played by Sharlto Copley, comes into contact with an extraterrestrial fluid during an eviction process and begins mutating into an alien, transforming from an oppressor into an outcast. Through this story, the filmmakers explored themes of segregation, racism, and social isolation.
Box Office Triumph on a $30 Million Budget and 4 Oscar Nominations
According to Box Office Mojo, on a modest production budget of $30 million, the film grossed over $211 million worldwide (with $115 million coming from the US and Canadian market).
The gritty R-rated sci-fi action movie achieved rare recognition for an independent sci-fi film, earning four Academy Award nominations:
- Best Picture;
- Best Adapted Screenplay;
- Best Visual Effects;
- Best Film Editing.

District 10 Sequel Put on Hold
As reported by Collider, the open ending of the original movie sparked plans for a sequel titled District 10. In 2021, Neill Blomkamp and Sharlto Copley were actively working on the script for the second part, but the project never reached the soundstage due to the director’s creative doubts and the lack of an approved budget.
As of 2026, development on the sequel remains on pause, while its release on Pluto TV gives the original film a second life among fans of smart social sci-fi.
