Publisher Paradox Interactive prematurely revealed the title and concept of its next major game. Users on the company’s official forum discovered hidden technical subforums for Afterworld—an original post-apocalyptic grand strategy game in the vein of Hearts of Iron and Stellaris.
The game’s announcement was meant to be the studio’s main surprise at the European Gamescom 2026 trade show.
From a Survivor Tribe to the Rebirth of Civilization
According to DualShockers, the leak occurred due to the early creation of subforums for upcoming developer diaries and a companion Discord server for the project.
In its description, the title is positioned as a new standalone franchise in the survival grand strategy genre, unrelated to the city-builder Surviving the Aftermath.
Gameplay is set at a global scale:
- Managing an entire society and developing a network of wasteland settlements;
- Step-by-step reverse engineering and restoring the technologies of a fallen civilization;
- Territorial expansion, resource control, military conflicts, and diplomacy between surviving factions.
In the community, the concept is already being compared to the popular fan mod Old World Blues for Hearts of Iron IV and the hardcore strategy game Shadow Empire.
Teaser Campaign and Official Reveal Date
The leaked information explained the mysterious teasers the publisher had been posting on social media for its key games, showing the timeline of the world’s downfall—from a cosmic threat to the emergence of primitive communities on city ruins. On the official Can You Guess PDX page, the company confirms an upcoming announcement for its next flagship strategy game.
A full presentation of Afterworld featuring a debut trailer will take place on August 25 live during Gamescom Opening Night Live. During the stream, the developers will reveal platforms, gameplay mechanics, and the release window for the project.
