Hearts of Iron IV Creators Announce Afterworld, a Fallout-Style Post-Apocalyptic Grand Strategy Game

At the opening of Gamescom 2026, Paradox Development Studio officially unveiled its next flagship project, the grand strategy game Afterworld. Moving away from familiar historical eras, the game tasks players with leading a tribe of survivors to rebuild civilization from scratch on the ruins of post-nuclear North America.

The project blends survival mechanics with Paradox’s signature grand strategy empire management.

From Shelter Survival to a Continental Empire

Each playthrough begins with choosing a faction origin: players can control vault dwellers leaving a decaying underground bunker for the first time, Mad Max-style nomadic raiders, or a religious cult searching for ancient relics.

Early on, players must fight for basic resources like water, medicine, and fuel. As settlements grow, the game scales up into a traditional Grand Strategy experience featuring trade caravans, laws on augmentations, mutant integration, diplomacy, and full-scale territorial warfare.

Procedural Map Generation and the Ideas Tree

According to PC Gamer, the game features a procedurally generated North America: while the continent’s recognizable coastline remains intact, the placement of resource deposits, hostile tribes, and anomalies is randomized in every playthrough.

Instead of a linear technology tree, the developers introduced the Ideas Tree system, where research depends on the practical experience of your people:

  • Reaching a river unlocks irrigation technologies;
  • Clashing with advanced factions unlocks institutions of centralized power and religion;
  • If resources run dry, the entire state can be mobilized and relocated to another region as a nomadic horde.

The Threat of the Ancients and the Development Team

The primary antagonists are the Ancients, a caste of immortal rulers who survived thanks to secret old-world technologies and command armies of giant combat walkers.

The game is being led by Dan Lind, the former game director of Hearts of Iron IV. This marks the studio’s first original sci-fi universe since the release of Stellaris in 2016.

The game will feature a story campaign, competitive online multiplayer, co-op, and mod support via the Steam Workshop. Afterworld is already available to wishlist on Steam, and the developers will announce the release window in upcoming dev diaries.
