Prime Video Cancels ‘Spider-Noir’ Starring Nicolas Cage Despite Strong Ratings and 11 Emmy Nominations

Streaming service Prime Video has decided not to renew ‘Spider-Noir’ for a second season. The cancellation comes as a surprise given positive critical reviews, strong viewership, and 11 Emmy nominations, but the platform does not plan to continue the project.
Billions of Minutes Viewed and Technical Acclaim
The series premiered in late May 2026, immersing viewers in the atmosphere of 1930s Great Depression-era New York. The story centers on Ben Reilly, an exhausted private investigator trying to put his superhero crime-fighting past behind him. Nicolas Cage returned as the alternative Spider-Man, having previously voiced the character in the Oscar-winning animated hit “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”.
The show received a warm reception from audiences, holding a 92% critic rating and a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewership metrics were equally strong. According to TheWrap, citing Nielsen data, users logged roughly 2.6 billion minutes of watch time in the first six weeks following its release.
Furthermore, according to a report by El País, ‘Spider-Noir’ emerged as Prime Video’s top contender in terms of 2026 Emmy nominations. The show scored 11 nominations, primarily in creative arts categories for its cinematography, visual effects, stunt coordination, makeup, costumes, and original score.
Reasons for Cancellation and the Future of Sony Projects
On social media and industry communities, commentators were quick to attribute the cancellation to the high cost of period production and poor audience retention toward the end of the season. However, Amazon MGM Studios executives have not commented on the official reasoning; the company has publicly disclosed neither per-episode production costs nor internal completion rates, leaving any assertions of financial failure as mere speculation.
From a narrative standpoint, viewers are not left hanging: the first season was written from the start as a self-contained story with a definitive resolution that requires no sequel and leaves no cliffhangers.
The strategic partnership between Sony Pictures Television and Amazon will continue despite the decision. The studios have already greenlit their next joint series based on Marvel characters from Sony’s library, with details set to be revealed in the coming months.
