Robert Pattinson Conquers Venice as a TV Journalist: Thriller ‘Primetime’ Debuts With 94% on Rotten Tomatoes

The thriller “Primetime” from indie studio A24 had its world premiere at the 83rd Venice Film Festival. The film, starring Robert Pattinson, drew prolonged applause from the audience, and early reviews from trade press have pushed its Rotten Tomatoes score to 94%.

Real-Life Inspiration and a Live Manhunt

The plot takes viewers back to 2006 and is inspired by American TV journalist Chris Hansen, creator of the controversial NBC show “To Catch a Predator.” Hansen staged sting operations against suspected child predators using fake online chats and hidden cameras, turning the apprehension of suspects into a ratings-driven media spectacle.

According to the Associated Press, the screenplay is based on a journalistic investigation by Luke Dittrich for Esquire magazine. The article covered a tragic TV operation in which an assistant district attorney, Bill Conradt, took his own life during a raid with the film crew.

Chris Hansen himself was not involved in the production and has already publicly criticized the film, accusing the creators of distorting facts. The filmmakers, in turn, point out that they were not making a documentary biopic. For director Lance Oppenheim, this is his debut in live-action feature filmmaking, using Hansen’s story as a springboard for a tough examination of journalism’s moral compromises and the thirst for viewership.

Pattinson’s Creative Control and Release Date

Robert Pattinson initially joined the project only as a producer, but later decided he wanted to take on the morally ambiguous role of the TV star. He is joined by Merritt Wever, Skyler Gisondo, and renowned indie singer Phoebe Bridgers, for whom the film marks her acting debut in a major motion picture.

The premiere screening in Venice ended with a seven-to-nine-minute standing ovation. As Reuters notes, critics are praising the film’s sharp satire of 2000s entertainment culture and calling Pattinson’s transformation one of the most powerful performances in his filmography.

According to A24, the film runs 1 hour 50 minutes and will hit international theaters on September 25, 2026.
