S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Multiplayer Still in Development: GSC Confirms Plans, Denies Co-op

Ukrainian studio GSC Game World is continuing development on the promised multiplayer mode for post-apocalyptic shooter S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. At Gamescom 2026, company leadership confirmed that the multiplayer component has not been canceled and remains in production, while debunking rumors about co-op campaign support.

Gamescom Confirmation and No Release Dates

Rumors about the cancellation of the multiplayer mode circulated within the community amid a long silence. As reported by Insider Gaming, journalists spoke directly with Yevhen and Mariya Hryhorovych, who assured that the multiplayer component remains on the studio’s roadmap.

At the same time, the developers refuted rumors claiming a release in the “first half of 2027”: they refused to name even an estimated launch window, citing a heavy workload on the engineering team.

Reasons for the Delay: Focus on Update 2.0 and Story DLC

Following the game’s release in November 2024, the studio focused its primary efforts on technical polish and expanding the single-player campaign:

  • the major patch Update 2.0 completely overhauled the graphics engine, the A-Life 2.0 life simulation algorithms, lighting system, and physics;
  • the first story expansion, Cost of Hope, was released, opening the Chornobyl NPP and new locations for exploration;
  • the studio is simultaneously working on the second story DLC.

Polishing the extensive single-player content naturally pushed back work on multiplayer netcode.

Competitive PvP Instead of Co-op

Many fans mistook the multiplayer announcement as a chance to explore the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone in a four-player co-op mode. However, the studio has repeatedly stated that there will be no co-op in the game.

In official statements on the Steam forums, GSC representatives explicitly clarified the distinction:

“S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has always been and remains a strictly single-player experience. No co-op mode is planned: multiplayer is a separate competitive entity.”

The multiplayer mode is designed from the ground up around classic competitive gameplay: free-for-all Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch firefights on self-contained arena maps with loadout selection.

Free Update for All Owners

According to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 support knowledge base, the multiplayer mode remains a free update for all owners of the base game on PC and Xbox Series X|S.

The developers will share a detailed look at multiplayer mechanics once work on the current single-player roadmap is complete.
