Tesla Plans to Start Selling Optimus Robots in the Second Half of 2027

Tesla expects to start selling its Optimus humanoid robot to outside customers in the second half of 2027. The company gave that target to JPMorgan analysts during a visit to its Fremont factory. Elon Musk has also said previously that Optimus should reach the open market by the end of 2027.

Tesla is now preparing Optimus Gen 3 for production. According to JPMorgan, the third-generation design is complete, the main supplier chain has been formed, and a production line is being installed in Fremont on the floor space where Model S and Model X were previously built.

The company has not yet shown the new version of the robot publicly. Tesla intends to unveil it closer to the start of production.

The robots will work inside Tesla first

Tesla plans to use the first batches of Optimus in its own divisions. Some of the robots will go to the so-called Optimus Academy, where they will accumulate data and learn to perform physical tasks, after which they are to be gradually deployed at Tesla facilities.

Sales to third-party customers are supposed to begin at the next stage. That is why 2027 should so far be seen as a target date for commercialization, not as a finalized date for a full-scale mass launch.

In its Q2 2026 report, Tesla confirmed it was installing the first Optimus production lines with plans to build robots in 2026. The company did not disclose the specific volumes of the first batches.

Tesla wants to turn Optimus into a general-purpose work robot

Tesla positions Optimus as an autonomous humanoid assistant for monotonous, dangerous and physically awkward work. In its Master Plan Part IV, the company lists humanoid robotics as a key focus alongside artificial intelligence and autonomous transport.

Elon Musk has also said that before broad sales begin, Optimus must prove sufficient reliability, safety and versatility in real-world conditions. That is why the first tasks will be industrial applications and work within Tesla’s own infrastructure.

This sets Optimus apart from many demonstration humanoids: Tesla is trying not just to show a working prototype but to build mass production and its own training environment around it.

At the same time, the key commercial parameters remain unknown. Tesla has not announced the price of Optimus, the exact start date for sales or production volumes for outside customers. So the plans for the second half of 2027 may still change as Gen 3 is prepared for mass production.
