Warner Bros. Discovery has officially confirmed the development of a sequel to the action game Hogwarts Legacy in a letter to shareholders. According to Dexerto, the project from Avalanche Software is being built on Unreal Engine 5 and will feature a range of new gameplay mechanics.

The transition to Unreal Engine 5 will allow for the use of Nanite technology for high-detail Hogwarts architecture and Lumen for real-time dynamic lighting, where reflections from spells like Lumos or Incendio will realistically bounce off armor and stone walls.

Gameplay innovations: Quidditch, reputation, and co-op

The second installment significantly expands the gameplay:

  • Reputation system and House points: player actions will influence the reactions of students and professors. Sneaking into the Restricted Section of the library at night or using Dark Magic will result in point deductions and the risk of losing the House Cup;
  • In-game Quidditch: the sequel introduces full Quidditch with a choice of team positions (Seeker, Beater, Chaser, or Keeper), updated flight physics, and broom customization;
  • Seamless co-op: players will be able to tackle story dungeons, combine spells in duels, and explore the map in groups of 2 to 4 people.

Map expansion and story

The game map will extend beyond the surroundings of Hogwarts and Hogsmeade. The project will add Diagon Alley as a key trading hub for customizing robes, purchasing ingredients and wands, as well as the multi-level Ministry of Magic building.

The story will pick up immediately after the events of the first game: the protagonist will return to the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for their sixth year. This will allow players to retain previously learned spells from the very beginning of the playthrough and move on to mastering more complex and dangerous magic.
