Metro 2039 Gameplay to Debut at Gamescom 2026 Opening Ceremony on August 25

4A Games and publisher Deep Silver will showcase the post-apocalyptic shooter Metro 2039 at Gamescom Opening Night Live, which kicks off on August 25 at 9:00 PM Kyiv time. According to publisher Deep Silver and Instant Gaming, the game is slated for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S in February 2027.
In addition to the online presentation at Geoff Keighley’s show, the developers will bring the first public playable demo to the expo, available on the Xbox booth. The opening ceremony will also feature The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past story expansion, Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, and the final installment of the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy, Revelation.
Story Changes and the 4A Engine
The story of the fourth numbered entry in the series has undergone a major overhaul: the narrative is darker and focuses on themes of military propaganda, the fall of totalitarian regimes, and the struggle for freedom within the Moscow metro.
The shooter is being developed on an updated version of the 4A Engine exclusively for current platforms. The game features a revamped global illumination system based on next-gen ray tracing and an improved tunnel ecosystem simulation with autonomous behavior for mutants and hostile factions.
Before the official reveal, Metro 2039’s Steam page surpassed 1 million wishlist additions.
