Chinese engineers set an acceleration record by speeding an experimental maglev vehicle to 800 km/h in 5.3 seconds. Testing of the 1.1-ton driverless maglev, reported by The Independent, demonstrated acceleration capabilities comparable to the speeds of passenger airliners.

Testing of the experimental carriage took place at the Donghu laboratory on a 1-kilometer track in Hubei province, according to the regional government’s portal. The speed of 800 km/h was reached on the main section of the track, after which an electromagnetic braking system brought the vehicle to a complete stop within about 200 meters.

Applications in Transportation and Aerospace

According to CGTN, the platform was not designed solely for planning future ground maglev lines. The system was built as a multi-purpose testbed to develop electromagnetic launch systems for aerospace craft, calibrate sensors, and test materials for resistance to extreme g-forces.

Previously, the same vehicle accelerated to 650 km/h in 7 seconds, after which the testbed’s electromagnetic power circuits were upgraded to reach the 800 km/h mark.
